Currency of Vietnam is called the Vietnam Dong,
VND.
Paper Denominations:

Coin Denominations:

American USD is widely accepted and used in the major cities as well as hotels and resorts. Average conversion is about 1 USD = 16,5000 VND
Canadian CAD is used too, however not as widely accepted.
Credit Cards: are widely used in the major cities but not so much in the smaller towns.
Debit Cards: are also widely used at the major banks and atms in the cities. Be aware though that are limits to how much you can take out using these cards. Some ATMs have a limit of 2 million VND, and others (HSBC) has a limit of around 4 million VND. Fees associated with the transaction are about 40,000 VND and whatever fees your bank may charge.
Tips:
- Coming into Vietnam, it is better tip some of the officials and valets so that you get better service and through the process faster. $5 to $20 will help relieve some stress.
- Before leaving any of the major cities, it is highly recommended to to have a few million VND for incidentals, restaurants, rest stops.
- Some hotels require a few million dong for deposits on the room when you arrive.
